Role: Writer, graphic designer

In 2018, I designed and implemented Pacific Lutheran University’s only media, news and information literacy course offering. Since then, the course continually fills quickly with a significance waitlist every academic year. Concerned about the ways in which disinformation has increasingly been used to fuel anti-democratic movements in the United States and abroad, I began producing curriculum modules for local high schools to pilot early intervention news and information literacy programming. The Social Media Affordances module teaches students about the corporate and algorithmic forces behind much of their experiences on social media, encourages students to analyze the motivations for these forces, and prompts students to reflect on how each social media platform contains various rules for behavior, which in turn may influence their own experiences and communication on social media.
