Context

Studies suggest that when students see their identities and histories reflected in their curriculum, they experience an increased sense of belonging and are therefore more likely to engage in their learning. Cattail Rising (ƛ̓alsək swiči [Quinault]) is a Washington-based organization that facilitates collaboration between Tribal and non-Tribal partners—including school districts—to develop, grow, and foster educational opportunities that honor traditional Native teachings, demonstrate Tribal sovereignty, and support the well-being of Native students, families, and communities through curriculum instruction and professional development for educators.

As part of its establishment as a newly independent non-profit, Cattail Rising, formerly Native Voices, needed a video explaining its history, mission, and services to school districts, students and families, and potential funders.

Deliverables

I created an organizational identity video for Cattail Rising to both use on their new website and share with potential clients, collaborators, and funders. Through interviews, b-roll visits, and consultations, I learned about Cattail Rising's history, vision, and values and crafted a storyboard designed to tell their story to each target audience.

I handled all videography for interviews and b-roll conducted at Cattail Rising's advisory retreat (private home and outdoor clips). Interviews and b-roll taking place at Cattail Rising's educator's academy were conducted by Kristen Jaudon of Educational Service District 113 (great lodge clips).
