Context

While the Pacific Northwest region is home to a large population of Indigenous communities, Native students continue to experience opportunity gaps within the education system. Traditional curricula that reinforce settler-colonial narratives can marginalize Native histories and perspectives. As a result, Native students rarely see their identities reflected, leading to lower engagement, fewer identity-safe spaces, and reduced attendance and graduation rates compared to peers.

The Region 16 Comprehensive Center's Tribal Advisory Board proposed an annual convening of educational leaders advancing solutions to address education gaps for Native students from across Alaska, Oregon, and Washington. By holding space to share experiences, solutions, and resources across a variety of topics such as Title VI funding, Tribal compact schools, language revitalization, and culturally sustaining curricula, the Leaders in Native Education Convening fostered inter-state connections, collective planning, and access to resources to advance Native student well-being.

Deliverable

I created an impact video for the Leaders in Native Education Convening, highlighting the connections participants made to advance systemic change that supports the success and belonging of Native students within the region's education systems.

I handled videography for both interviews and b-roll footage. I also created the storyboard, edited the video, and designed graphics. The video served to communicate the impact of the convening and advocate for further grant support for this work.
